Larrabee
"Established 1887"

Larrabee entrance photo imageHome to 149 people and a large, active feed mill, Larrabee is a small but strong link in the Iowa chain. The citizens here divide their time between working hard and spending time with family and friends at the local community center or city park. The community has recently reshaped its horizon with the addition of the $4 million feed mill.

History
Larrabee was incorporated in 1887 and named after the 13th governor of Iowa, William Larrabee. This gentleman was born in Connecticut in 1832, from French Hugenot immigrants who went by the name d'Larrabee. In 1853 he came to Iowa and later became involved in politics. He served in the Iowa Senate before becoming elected as governor. One year after his inauguration, the town was recognized by the state as a municipality.

Local Events & Attractions

The Larrabee Community Center
Activities and meetings of all kinds are held at the Larrabee Community Center for both young and old. Previously, the building was called Weimer's Tavern but received its new image in the early 1990's. The center is well-maintained and weekly gatherings take place there, for groups such as the senior citizens and boosters club. Graduation and wedding parties often rent the center in honor of their special occasions.

Feed Mill PhotoFirst Cooperative Association Feed Mill
Opening in March of 1999, the First Cooperative Association Feed Mill is a $4 million installation that is capable of producing 120,000 tons of feed per year. The FCA, the CAEDC and the city of Larrabee have made this a joint effort of the highest priority, and their combined effort has made a real boost to the area. 90% of the feed produced is for hog consumption and the remaining 10% is for poultry, and the mill (at maximum) will use five million bushels of corn annually. Trucks haul the processed grain to customers within a 50 mile radius.
