AUTHORS OF #1 NATIONAL BEST SELLING BOOK TO APPEAR AT THE SANFORD MUSEUM

A terrified voice cried out in the night.  "Who are you? What do you want?  The sound of snapping twigs closed in on the five teenagers enjoying an evening around a glowing campfire at Gitchie Manitou State Park. The night of music and laughter had taken a dark turn. (An excerpt from Gitchie Girl.)

The subject of the book is Sandra Cheskey, the lone survivor of the 1973 Gitchie Manitou mass murders and her personal account regarding one of the Midwest’s most heinous crimes. Cheskey recently broke a forty-year silence to give the riveting and shocking inside story surrounding this horrific event.

On Wednesday, June 8th at 6:30 PM, authors Phil and Sandy Hamman from Sioux City, Iowa will be at the Sanford Museum to give a presentation about the inside story of the book Gitchie Girl and the events surrounding the Gitchie Manitou mass murders. The presentation portrays the survivor’s story of Cheskey’s many struggles to rebuild her life emotionally and spiritually following a sexual assault that night. A book signing will follow the event. Gitchie Girl is a #1 national best seller on several of Barnes & Noble’s and Amazon’s true crime lists. Books will be available on site for purchase.

In addition to the authors' talk, there will be a book signing at the Book Vine From 4:30 - 5:30.

Gitchie Girl: The Survivor’s Inside Story of the Mass Murders that Shocked the Heartland (eLectio Publishing)

Book Overview

Gitchie Girl has catapulted to the top of several #1 national bestseller lists in True Crime categories, and it is not a self-published book. It profiles the true story of the 1973 Gitchie Manitou State Park mass murders that occurred in northwest Iowa. Four teenagers were shot, and a 13-year-old girl, Sandra Cheskey, was the lone survivor. For over four decades she refused interviews and book offers. She recently broke this silence and gave the inside story of the events of that night to set the facts straight. The lone survivor, Sandra, became known as “The Gitchie Girl,” and faced alienation, whispers, and exclusion from social events as if she had done something wrong. So, how does your life proceed and how do you rebuild your life after becoming “The Gitchie Girl?” The book tells about this process as well as the strange twists surrounding the crime and the inside conversations that occurred during one of the most heinous crimes to have hit the Midwest.

Through extensive research, interviews, and personal insight the authors bring a riveting look at the heinous crime that shook the Midwest in the early 1970s. Written from rare, inside interviews with the lone survivor who broke nearly four decades of silence, this story brings the reader a shocking yet moving story that will not soon be forgotten.

The Naturalist's Lunchbox is an outdoor program that runs from noon-1:00pm with hands on activities beginning around 12:20pm. It's a time to enjoy the outdoors, eat your lunch, and be part of a fun activity that the whole family will enjoy. Each program will take 30-40 minutes and be on a different topic. Come at noon to enjoy your lunch, then take part in the activities.

The program is free of charge and will contain fun activities geared towards families with children ages 13 and under, but everyone is welcome! Activities will take place at or near the big shelter in Gillete Park, next to the Bacon Aquatic Center, so when you're done with lunch and our fun activites you can head to the pool or play at the playground.

Bring your lunch, blanket if you want to sit in the grass, and be prepared for any type of weather. Please leave the family pet at home. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Get outside and see what's in the Naturalist's Lunchbox!
